Presence
Presence Over Presents
The most valuable gift you can give.
As I drove through a shopping center one weekend before the holidays, I watched the masses hurry in and out of stores — some with determination, some with stress, some emerging with relief and accomplishment.
Isn't it interesting that we invest so much time (and money) searching for something we hope another person will like? Each gift has a price — but the price is not a measure of how much we love someone. What matters is the significance of the gift: the level of connection we have, knowing their likes and dislikes, their needs and desires. Significance is the result of observation, conversation, and not-so-subtle hints.
Presence is priceless. It is how memories are made and cherished.
It is also important to recognize that some of your family and friends may prefer your presence over your presents. To know that requires you to spend quality time with them. Observing. Listening.
Presence is priceless. It is how memories are made and cherished. It is selfless. It is kind. It can be the most valuable gift you ever give to another person — not only this season, but throughout each year.
Lead with presence.
